The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National
Research Council will release a major report, _Realizing the Information
Future_, at a briefing on the morning of May 25 at the National
Academies of Sciences and Engineering building (2101 Constitution
Avenue, NW, Washington, DC) from 10:00 a.m. to approximately 12:00
noon. Room location will be set imminently. This message is a
preliminary notice; an indication of your availability would be
appreciated, and a fuller invitation will be forthcoming. Although this
message is being sent to a limited list, suggestions of others to invite are
welcome.

_Realizing the Information Future_ was prepared at the request of NSF
by a 15-member expert committee chaired by Dr. Leonard Kleinrock of
UCLA and composed of pioneers in the development and use of the
Internet, in particular, as well as other major networks. The full
committee membership is listed below. The report contains three
essential components: a detailed discussion of architectural and other
technical aspects of the emerging national information infrastructure;
discussions of financing, access principles, and other issues relating to
infrastructure deployment, emphasizing the needs and insights of the
research and education communities; and a culminating discussion of
opportunities and roles for the federal government, focusing on
mechanisms for influencing the shape of the infrastructure.

The May 25 briefing will feature Dr. Kleinrock and two other committee
members, including Dr. David Clark of MIT and Ms. Connie Stout of
TENET. The briefing will include a presentation of the findings,
conclusions, and recommendations in the report, followed by a question
and answer period.

Please indicate your availability to participate in this special briefing and
suggestions of others to invite. Space at the NAS building is limited,
and accordingly so must be the invitations.

I look forward to sharing with you this exciting and timely report.
