Cocke to Receive Japan's Nippon Electric Corporation (NEC) Prize


John Cocke, retired IBM Fellow, Thomas J. Watson Research Center,
has been named recipient of the 1994 Computers and Communication
(C&C) Prize.  Cocke was recognized for his contributions to the computer
industry in the creation of the Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC)
and Program Optimization Technology.


The C&C Prize consists of a certificate, a medal and a cash award.
It is underwritten by the NEC Foundation and awarded annually to one
scientist outside Japan.


The award will be presented at the C&C Prize commendation ceremony
in Tokyo on October 26, 1994.  Marc A. Auslander, systems, will accept
the prize on behalf of Cocke who is unable to attend due to a previous
commitment.
