CITIZENS' HANDBOOK AVAILABLE ELECTRONICALLY ON THE INTERNET
_________________________________________________________________

     On Thursday, October 20, 1994 at 11:30 a.m. in room 450 of
the Old Executive Office Building, Vice President Gore and Dr.
John Gibbons, Director of the Office of Science and Technology
Policy, will unveil and demonstrate "Welcome to the White House:
An Interactive Citizens' Handbook." This new White House service
is available on the Internet, and will make the resources of the
federal government more easily available to all Americans.

This White House service will allow user-friendly access
through multi-media software called Mosaic, developed at the
National Center for Supercomputing Applications. This service
provides access a wide array of government information, ranging
from virtual White House tours, to an on-line guide of Executive
Branch agencies, to improved access to White House documents and
press releases.

The event will feature remarks from Vice President Gore, a
demonstration of "Welcome to the White House" done on a large
projection screen, a public, touch-screen kiosk, provided by the
United States Postal Service, and a braille-equipped computer
provided by the Clearinghouse on Computer Accommodation in the
General Services Administration.

A video press release, as well as live audio and video, will
be available on October 20. Room 450 will be accessible for
television press at 10:30 a.m., print at 11:00 a.m. Press should
report to the White House Press Briefing Room through the
northwest gate for an escort to room 450. Media who would like
to attend, but do not have White House press credentials, should
contact the Office of Media Affairs, 202-456-7150.
