Anyone at an edu address has been able to bet real money on political races, earnings reports of selected firms, etc. at the Iowa Electronic Markets since 1992. Look at http://www.biz.uiowa.edu/iem/index.html for background and/or telnet to iem.biz.uiowa.edu to see the market in action and participate. Right now they are running markets on the 1996 Presidental race. (This experiment has been funded by the NSF Economics Division and has generated many very interesting papers and findings. It has also been a very valuable teaching tool.
