From: Carl Oppedahl <carl () oppedahl com> A bit of surfing took me to the Mexican NIC web site, which sets forth their policy <http://www.nic.mx/cgi-bin/domain.pl> regarding domain names and trademarks: "Registering a domain name does not confer any legal rights to that name and any disputes between parties over the rights to use a particular name are to be settled between the contending parties using normal legal methods." The Swiss policy is quite similar <http://www.nic.ch/policy_03.htm>. It would be interesting if someone could find the time to collect the domain name trademark policies of all the top-level domains of the Internet and compare them. I suspect it would turn out that NSI is in the distinct minority (probably a minority of one) in its decision to provide a free legal-services clinic for trademark owners, providing no-cost preliminary injunctive relief for them. NSI is probably also in the distinct minority in getting sued so often as a result of its policy. --- Carl Oppedahl, oppedahl () patents com Oppedahl & Larson, patent law firm http://www.patents.com/ is a web server with frequently asked questions and answers on patent law and other intellectual property subjects
