/fcc/ Federal Communications Commission NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Federal Communications Commission Chairman Reed Hundt on Tuesday has stepped down a year prior to the expiration of his term, sources within the agency said. [INLINE] Hundt announced his official resignation to agency employees over an 11:30 a.m. ET closed-circuit television broadcast, one employee said. A press conference has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. [INLINE] Hundt has served as chairman of the FCC since Nov. 29, 1993. Under his tenure, the agency has played an increasingly influential role in shaping the telecommunications landscape. Among his primary responsibilities has been the implementation of the landmark Telecommunications Act of 1996. [INLINE] Hundt's term is set to expire on June 30, 1998. [INLINE] However, he "has always wanted more," said a source within the FCC, referring to Hundt's interest in the position of Commerce Secretary.Link to top
