Candidates eye matching funds for e-checks

By Will Rodger, USATODAY.com

Spurred by candidates' success with online credit card
contributions, political consultants have dreamed up yet
another cutting-edge money grabber.

Checks.

Sometime early next month, the Federal Election
Commission is expected to take up a petition to grant
matching funds for contributions made via check online.
The proposal would add a third way to contribute --
credit and debit cards already are approved for matching
funds.

"Online checks could be the 'killer app' of this
campaign cycle," Campaign Advantage CEO Phil Tajitsu
Nash said Thursday. Nash first petitioned the FEC to
weigh the proposal in November.

FEC Chair Scott Thomas Thursday said the political
consultant will likely get what he wants. "I'm always
hopeful the commission can interpret the law to take
into account modern technologies. I'm assuming the
commission will take a fresh look at this and issue a
ruling that will allow most of what the requestor has
sought," he said................
