The Avenue of Technology Executive Program Presents: "From Hell to Eternity or We Never Had It So Good" John "maddog" Hall Thursday, October 21th, 1999 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Drexel University Stein Auditorium 33rd and Market Streets Philadelphia, PA 19104 Drexel University Alumni John "maddog" Hall will conduct a seminar on the Linux Operating System on Thursday, October 21 at 1 p.m. at Drexel University, Stein Auditorium, 33rd and Market Streets, Philadelphia, PA. The seminar is open to the public at no charge. No registration is required. During his seminar entitled "From Hell to Eternity or We Never Had It So Good," Hall will speak of the days before Computer Science, in the days of "Computer Black Magic," when (and if) you spoke of a Megabyte of main memory, it cost over a hundred thousand dollars. The days when getting one compile a day meant that you were doing well. Hear how modern day PCs and the Linux Operating System will revolutionize the teaching of computer science. ----- Hall is the Executive Director of Linux International (www.li.org), a non-profit vendor organization dedicated to the promotion of the Linux Operating System. His salary is graciously paid by VA Linux Systems (www.valinux.com), where he holds the title of "Director of Linux Evangelism". Hall is active in promoting the Linux operating system. Linux is a freely distributable re-implementation of the UNIX operating system. Previous to this job, Hall joined the UNIX group at Digital Equipment Corporation in 1983. For 16 years, Hall had been an engineer, product manager, and technical marketing manager for Digital UNIX products. He has received numerous awards for contributions to the UNIX product, including receiving the first "UNIX Partner's Award", a peer-level award for dedication to the UNIX operating system. Hall was instrumental in developing Digital's (then Compaq's) Linux strategy, and in having Linux ported to the Alpha system. Hall has been in the computer field since 1968, having received a Bachelor of Science degree from Drexel University. He founded the Drexel Computer Society in 1969. It was at Drexel that Hall programmed on a Digital LINC-8 computer (serial number 3), and Digital's PDP-8 line of computers in assembly language. Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Linux is an independent POSIX implementation and includes true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, proper memory management, TCP/IP networking, and other features consistent with Unix-type systems. ----- The seminar will be presented as a part of the Avenue of Technology Executive Program. These gatherings provide opportunities for professionals along the Avenue of Technology to network and exchange knowledge with colleagues in the professional technological community. The Avenue of Technology was proclaimed by Mayor Edward Rendell on December 7, 1998 as Market Street west of 30th Street. This high-tech corridor is home to innovative technology-based companies and research institutions and provides an insulated environment for small research- initiative start-ups while offering a variety of cultural, educational, and commercial resources. Founding sponsors of the Avenue of Technology are: Drexel University, ISI, University City District, University City Science Center, and University of Pennsylvania. Contributing sponsors are: Ben Franklin Technology Center SE PA, Care Management Science Corporation, Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, Corporate Technology Ventures, LibertyNet, Monell Chemical Senses Center, and Strategic Management Group, Inc.
