Microsoft's desktop `concession' taken from same old bag of tricks BY DAN GILLMOR Mercury News Microsoft, master of misdirection, is up to its usual tricks. The company's ``concession'' Wednesday -- giving personal computer manufacturers and their customers a sliver more choice in how they set up PCs -- is an absurdly overdue agreement to obey the law Microsoft has been breaking for years. The move is hypocritical in principle, meaningless in practice. It also diverts attention from important issues that this still-unrepentant lawbreaker wants us all to miss -- namely that competition in coming years is not so much about the configuration of desktop computers as about the fast-developing world of Internet services that Microsoft is trying to monopolize as thoroughly as it has dominated the desktop. http://www.siliconvalley.com/docs/opinion/dgillmor/dg071201.htm For archives see: http://www.interesting-people.org/
