One way of looking at this -- and it's not an original idea of mine -- is that this war began in August 1914, in Sarajevo, no less, which led to the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire (and the Russian Czarist, Austro-Hungarian, German-Prussian, and eventually the British Empire), and which appears to have no end in sight. The 2d Hundred Years War, perhaps?

Depends where you want to draw the line, but there is a continuity in everything. That's why understanding history is important.
