Forecasting Fiber's Future

Telecommunications Entrepreneur Craig McCaw Talks to TechTV About
What's Ahead for the Telecom Industry

Abstract:

The Internet bubble burst and now there's a glut of high-speed fiber.

"It's the greatest train wreck in communications since the '20s and really probably the greatest in history," said Craig McCaw, the telecom entrepreneur and billionaire who some have credited with creating the country's cellphone industry.

XO operates a 16,000-mile fiber optic network.

He says corporate customers are filling the broadband pipes --- especially in downtown metro areas --- more quickly than analysts realize.

McCaw said corporate customers are seeing great deals on bandwidth pricing and that's one reason the fiber may get filled sooner rather than later.

"Moving a bit on the Internet is 12 times cheaper than on a circuit switch network; at the same quality level, it's three times cheaper," said McCaw.
