[Note: I'm posting this as an example of all that's bad with current
spectrum management policy and practice. Make sure you bring not
only your technology and checkbook to the party! DLH]

Northpoint Lobbying Crumbles on Hill - - -

As Congress wraps up its lame duck session, it
appears that Northpoint Technology - the
Washington, D.C., company pushing its wireless
technology that would share frequencies with
satellite TV - failed again to gain an
exclusive hold on spectrum it needs for the
service.

Last week, right before an Intelligence
Conference Report was closed and sent to
the House floor for a vote, Northpoint
Technology made a push to have its spectrum-grab
language included in the legislation, sources
said. A united satellite industry stopped
the Northpoint attempt, and the Intelligence
Conference Report passed the House without
the company's proposed language, they said.

Northpoint has been lobbying Congress to
give it an exclusive lock on the wireless
technology, which will share spectrum used
by DBS services. The company is opposed to
an auction for the Multichannel Video and
Data Distribution Service (MVDDS) spectrum,
which is scheduled at the FCC for Feb. 13.

The Northpoint language would override the
Federal Communications Commission's decision
to hold auctions for MVDDS spectrum licenses,
and would grant the company a free, nationwide
exclusive authorization. In addition to the
Intelligence report, the company has reportedly
gone after several appropriations bills, the
farm bill, an economic stimulus package and
the Homeland Security bill.

Northpoint Technology has been at the front
of the or MVDDS debate in Washington. Satellite
interests are concerned that the spectrum-sharing
wireless technology will interfere with satellite
signals.
