It's actually a little easier than Eastlake explained, since the master cut cannot be within one level of the individual cut since that would make the slice of pin between the two cuts too thin for reliability. If you can get your hands on more than one individual key (easy in the case of a hotel) the possibilities can be quickly reduced to only a few. This is, as Eastlake said, very old information.
