Dave,

I too have been a deeply satisfied eMusic.com user. But it isn't perfect.

The good: No BS DRM measures, everything in mp3, all-you-can-download monthly prices around $10 and $15 a month, and "download this album" buttons.

The bad: They spent all their money on music, and they don't seem to have any left over for promotion or even much in the way of selection tools and description. You'll want to have two windows open, one to emusic and one to AMG.

And the music selection is, uh, quirky. Indie rock and classic jazz are big strengths, the rest seem like also-ran selections. But if you have *ever* spent more than five minutes looking through a "jazz bargain bin" of CDs or tapes, you will like eMusic. To decide if it's for you, you can check out their selections without buying anything. Go to www.emusic.com, and type the names of a few artists you are interested in into the search bar, or wander through the categories. You aren't required to log in until you want to download.

At the end of the day, emusic.com shows that the industry can beat "free" music, but not if it wants music fans to take a beating too.
