Subject: Columbia Shuttle Question

Dave,

I have a question that has been bothering me since the investigation
started that I have not seen an answer.

If NASA suspected there might be some damage to the tiles from the liftoff,
why didn't they do a space walk and inspect the outside of the shuttle
directly? They might not have been able to fix it, but at least they could
have known to not try a reentry. Maybe go to the space station.

I just read a news article:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=68&ncid=68&e=2&u=/nyt/200306
28/ts_nyt/nasasnewchargeshuttlerepairinspace

that talks about using satellites to look at the shuttle, but they seem to
be ignoring using the people in the shuttle. It does, after all, have
people in it and they have spacesuits ....

Bob
