Subject: IRAQI AIR CHIEF FIRED [65 killed in Baghdad markets]

From an NPR "news" broadcast Friday afternoon in which it was stated
repeatedly that the offending weapon was a U.S. bomb because they had seen
fighter airplanes overhead at the time of the most recent explosion. Looks
like the planes were the TARGETS that were MISSED. . . .

IRAQI AIR CHIEF FIRED

Saddam Hussein has sacked one of his top military commanders after a series
of missiles mis-fired and exploded in residential areas of Baghdad, Downing
Street has said.

A large number of Iraqi surface to air missiles have malfunctioned, failed
to hit their targets and fallen on Baghdad, and civil defence workers have
been removing Iraqi missile fragments from residential areas, the Prime
Minister's official spokesman said.

He added that the new intelligence gave reason for "scepticism" over
Saddam's claims that the Coalition was to blame for two blasts in Iraqi
markets which together killed around 65 civilians this week.

"There is still no evidence that coalition missiles were responsible for
what happened on Wednesday (the first marketplace bombing) and we're still
investigating what happened last night (the other marketplace bombing)," the
Prime Minister's spokesman said.

Tony Blair was given an intelligence briefing this morning on the sacking of
Saddam's cousin Musahim Saab al-Tikriti as commander of Iraq's air defence
force.

He was replaced by General Shahin Yasin Muhammad al-Tikriti, said Mr Blair's
spokesman, who refused to divulge how the information had emerged.
