Dear Dave

I don't think we will see any true anti-war movement until they start up
"The Draft", and mothers like me have to send their babies to Canada (Mine's
19 and he will definitely be heading North if any such thing happens)

I thought your readers may like to ask the Troops themselves. November '04 I
started a chat group, HomeLand Hugs, to specifically seek out Troops and
Civilian support and get the real story. We use Yahoo Messenger, as many of them there have accounts and simply try to keep their spirits up. Regardless of the advances in war-fighting, the effect of brutality is the same. Many of them come back drinking relentlessly, on anti-depressants, and to ruined families. Many are in limbo and awaiting their second or even third tours.

We don't send packages. We don't have prayer circles. We simply chat with
them, and try to provide some semblance of sanity in a pit of madness. I
have learned so much more from them than anything CNN ever told me.

We have 220 members, 100 of those being either "in-country", or new
Veterans. Beware: we are probably the only non-religious, non-political,
non-God-and-country support group on the web, with all branches of service and many civilian contractors, and I fight furiously to keep it this way.

Only one or two come to us pro-Bush and they soon bolt. Most of them will say they are simply doing their jobs, and not one of them whine about it.

Please don't forget those in Afghanistan as they are still dying there every week. Unfortunately, we have a difficult time having live conversations with those, but we do have at least 2 Veterans in our group who were there in the
early days of 2002.

Yours,
Gail

Tet was a clear military victory for the United States in Vietnam:
the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese were soundly defeated on the
battlefield. But Tet was a public relations/propaganda disaster back
in the United States, possibly because of the anti-war bias of the
media. If there is a "Tet like attack on Baghdad" will history
repeat itself? The insurgents will be undoubtedley be annihilated if
they stand and fight so the question is whether they would win the
propaganda war? Except for the "home front" propaganda issue, the US
military is probably hoping for a Tet-like attack where they can
confront and utterly destroy the enemy.

And the "home front" is much different today than in the Tet-era: no
anti-war protests on college campuses, soldiers are admired not
reviled, there is strong political support for the troops in the
field, the President has a strong core of support, and there is an
effective rightwing/pro-war press (talk radio, Fox News Channel, the
Washington Times, rightwing bloggers, etc.) to counter the leftwing/
anti-war press. So, a "Tet like attack on Baghdad" might be the best
thing that could happen.

Not sure if you caught Sy Hersch on the Daily Show the other night
http://onegoodmove.org/1gm/1gmarchive/002302.html
He claims US intelligence now indicates the insurgency is
regrouping and
preparing for a TET-like attack on Baghdad, and the report this
morning of
a coordinated attack in West Baghdad seems to lend some credence to
his
claim. If there is a Battle for Baghdad looming, and the Green Zone is
isolated, the war may not drag on for years, as most people are
predicting.
