For IP if you wish...

Hello Dave,

I would be surprised if there was anyone on the list who has NOT heard
of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who "runs" law enforcement in Maricopa County
(the county encompassing Phoenix, currently the 5th largest city/metro
are in the country). Perhaps the Female Chain-Gangs ring a bell? Or his
Tent City? Or the Pink Underwear he issues?

Well, after winning an ugly election last November, Sheriff Joe seems to
have been emboldened;

He has ordered his officers to begin fingerprinting everyone stopped for
any SUSPECTED violation, especially traffic infractions! His reasoning
is that he is using the mechanism to help put an end to identity theft.
Seriously. He claims it is voluntary, but I wonder how many innocent
people who get flustered after being stopped by an Arizona Highway
Patrol Officer will think to protest, or refuse?

Arpaio wants drivers' thumbprints

Sheriff Joe Arpaio launched an attack against identity theft Thursday as
deputies began asking southwest Valley motorists to voluntarily submit
thumbprints when pulled over for routine traffic stops.

The goal is to catch people who take the wheel with stolen or falsified
driver's licenses, Arpaio said.

Although Arizona has the highest proportion of identity-theft victims in
the nation, civil libertarians, as well as a constitutional scholar at
Arizona State University, quickly described the move as ill-advised, if
not illegal....
