Dave (for IP),

For those folks who would like to see ICANN abandon everything except
"technical coordination" comes what should be received as a bit of
good news: ICANN is lifting the price caps on Verisign's .NET registry
fees.

As you probably recall, back in 1999 when ICANN finally brought
Network Solutions under its authority, ICANN imposed a $6/registration
cap on what the registry could charge registrars for COM/NET/ORG
domain names. With the new .NET agreement entered last week between
ICANN and Verisign, the caps are coming off, effective January 1,
2007:

On the one hand, this gets ICANN out of the non-"technical
coordination" business of price control. On the other hand, will you
be able to afford to renew your .NET domain name when Versign
implements its new pricing model in 2007?

Something to consider when thinking about the proper role of ICANN and
the meaning of "technical coordination."
