MasterCard reported that over 40,000,000 credit card numbers, less than half of which are MasterCards, may have been stolen. CardSystems Solutions, which processes transactions for merchants and banks, was infected with a script that that targeted certain kinds of transactions. That is, this wasn't the usual carelessness, it was a targeted attack by a sophisticated adversary. The MasterCard statement is at http://www.mastercardinternational.com/cgi-bin/newsroom.cgi?id=1038 . --Steven M.
