Jim Gray, famous database maven, in an interview with David Patterson (of UCBerkeley CS) has already lamented the fact that current "disk drives" are already much more like tape drives in their random access performance. i highly recommend reading this for a bit of perspective <http://www.acmqueue.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=43> drives storing 10^15 bytes cannot help but exacerbate the huge mismatches in performance and behavior, with the likely result that the devices will not be as immediately usable as the fantastical extrapolation might imply. i'd love to see Jim Gray's comments on using such a device. -mo
