Dave --Something else that latest draft does, apparently, is deep-six the Sports Freedom Act language that Stevens incorporated from a bill introduced by Sen. Ensign and others. That was the section designed to prevent cable companies from monopolizing local sports telecasts, as Comcast does here in Philadelphia by withholding SportsNet from the satellites.
In its place is an expanded version of another section designed to improve satellite-TV access in Alaska and Hawaii.
I did a blog entry on this today: http://go.philly.com/consumerwatch Jeff Gelles Philadelphia Inquirer -----Original Message----- From: David Farber [mailto:dave () farber net] Sent: Monday, June 19, 2006 2:40 PM To: ip () v2 listbox com Subject: [IP] more on Three Drafts of Senate Commerce Committee Communications Bill Begin forwarded message: From: Brett Glass <brett () lariat org> Date: June 19, 2006 2:28:48 PM EDT To: dave () farber net, ip () v2 listbox com Subject: Re: [IP] Three Drafts of Senate Commerce Committee Communications Bill At 11:29 AM 6/19/2006, Drew Clark wrote:
A copy of Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Steven's new telecom legislation is available -- and it keeps growing. What started out as 135 pages on May 1 grew to 151 pages in the June 9 draft that was released on June 12. This third draft -- dated June 16 and expected to be officially unveiled in a 10 a.m. briefing on Capitol Hill -- tops off at 151 pages.
It's also worth noting that this new version makes an end run around recent court decisions by specifically enabling the FCC to mandate the "broadcast flag." This flag is intended to prevent recording or time-shifting of audio and video programming. --Brett Glass ------------------------------------- You are subscribed as jgelles () phillynews com To manage your subscription, go to http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ipArchives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting- people/
