Deism vs. Theism is only one of the issues of the late 18th century that are completely lost to educated people today.
Given their near-perfect ignorance of the arguments at the time (such as Paine's Rights of Man) exhibited by most educated people today, especially those who have the temerity to claim that they know what the US founders meant, it is not surprising that religious nutcases can assert anything they damn well please.
