A quibble – it’s the first SQUARE mile around us. Once we think this way the policies we start asking lots of question and we can see the policies as arbitrary. The Internet isn’t just something out there – it’s in our homes and communities.
Comcast is telling me I can’t communicate with my neighbors. Why do we have “foreign” (out of town) companies limiting our communities’ ability to communicate? Why do we have to pay merely to mosey down the street?
Why can’t I let my neighbors watch their kids when they are playing in a pool behind my house?
Yet I can consume as much Comcast HDTV as I want without fearing a cap? Why must I be forced to repurpose a video distribution system for local connectivity?
Why do we give these companies the ability to define the future as nothing but more of the past? Why can’t we use local facilities for innovation, safety etc?

In an ideal world, this would lead to their demise, as happened with Prodigy. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen because Comcast has a last mile monopoly. I could care less about companies such as Comcast, except as they are monopolists. So long as last mile monopolies are allowed to exist it will be possible for incompetently managed operations to continue to exist. Without such a monopoly they will be subject to the creative destruction of the marketplace and they will forced to change or they will cease to exist.
