Interesting story - while driving to JFK airport ~6 weeks ago, I was
sitting in traffic behind what I assume was a deaf couple - they were
actively signing to each other in the car.

Declaring cell-phone use illegal went over without much protest.  But,
if hearing-impaired people were told they couldn't sign while driving
... all the disabled-persons organizations would pitch a fit.

Lets all just agree that these laws aren't being created to promote or
increase safety, but to drive sales of products - hands-free kits, etc.

Dave,

AAA has a new study out, that appears to confirm what many of us have
been saying for *years* -- hands-free cell phones are no safer when
driving than hand-held devices.  The problem is distraction, and there
is a wide spectrum of circumstances that fall into that category.
Laws that mandate the use of hands-free units are clearly called
