The focus on recycling old ideas and eschewing disruption echoes the posting about US Physics crumbling – who wants to risk new ideas when you are busy preventing or recycling what you already have. The 1080p screens were abundant but not at all exciting. They were also essentially empty with all the content being sealed tightly by DRM. There is something pathetic about waiting for the new generation of plastic discs for content while the abundant inexpensive distribution channels run afoul of DRM. I was annoyed by marketing lashups like the Panasonic LIMEX which uploads to Picasa via T-Mobile hotspots. But it will not connect to a laptop 2 inches away (according to the marketoid I asked)!! Overall I didn’t get a sense of the Internet as much more than a source of minor features. Of course if you look around you can still find the Internet lurking there. Apparently the new WM6 phones have NAT/Routers (carrier willing) but I only learned about it by having side geek conversations. Few phones had GPS – the emphasis is on subscribing rather than being able to do it yourself. Femto cells let you extended the carriers network rather than doing your own communicating. Same feeling on my flight back on JetBlue with a dollop of Yahoo messenger as one-off hack (though it said “service not available” when I tried it). -----Original Message----- From: David Farber [mailto:dave () farber net] Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2008 05:15 To: ip Subject: [IP] Any queries -- CES Rap ________________________________________ From: Jeff Porten [jporten () gmail com] Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2008 3:15 AM To: David Farber Subject: Re: [IP] CES Rap I'm covering CES for www.tidbits.com; there's only one day left in the show, so I don't know if I can give personalized attention, but if any IPers have any questions for me they're welcome to contact me directly.
