For IP: As of 2006, the average US home had 2.6 television sets. If anything, the 650 GB of television is an underestimate, especially in houses where there are multiple kids watching TV. http://www.americanpressinstitute.org/pages/resources/2006/04/fcc_to_tv_viewers_watch_what_w/ suggests 5 hours/day per adult, rather than 8, but also more than 3.5 hours per child. In a mythical 2 adult, 2 child family, all watching different shows, that's a bit over twice David Reed's estimate, about 1.4 TB per month. All this screams out for Switched Digital Video (over IP or over QAM), in which the provider makes multicast streams available for viewing. If no one in a cable neighborhood is watching one of the 400 channels that no one watches, no bandwidth is consumed. -dsr- On Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 12:58:06PM -0400, David Farber wrote:

It uses no upstream bandwidth at all. It uses about 6 mb/s * 86400 s/day * 1/3 * 30 days/per month / 8 b/B = 0.65 * 10^12 Bytes/month down. That is shared among some percentage of the 500 homes passed by your cable segment (assuming everyone is watching something differently, it is shared by 1). So month's usage is equivalent of 650 GB of data down, 0.0 GB up is a worst case model for your "typical" digital TV customer, if they never watch what their neighbors watch, and get really high quality (6mb/s) TV. Bob mentioned:10 Maverick games once Mark Cuban provides multiple points of viewin real time with real time compression. Bruce Kushnick,.
