Dave Recordon has a really good take on why the DoD considering banningsocial media is a non-starter: http://radar.oreilly.com/2009/08/the-web-itself-is-social.html
At a book event in NYC recently for Beth Noveck's "Wiki Government" book, she mentioned that the Air Force has an internal social network/reputation system called "Aristotle". Apparently, it's been successful (here's an article (that I haven't read yet) about it: http://peoplepointsystems.com/Aristotle_NAECON_PDF.pdf ) So, possibly some walled gardening here? Not that this undermines Recordon's point: just like the "analog hole" through which it's impossible to stop digital media, the "social hole" in military information will mean that some background level of social data must "tunnel" through such walled gardens.
