The Cambridge, Mass.-based research firm announced that Mitnick will be a keynote speaker Sept. 27 at its "Infrastructures for E-Business" conference in Los Angeles. Mitnick, who was accused of causing millions of dollars in damage to technology companies by penetrating their corporate networks, was imprisoned after leading the FBI on a three-year manhunt that ended in 1995. When he was released from federal prison early this year, he was barred from any contact with computers or speaking publicly about technology-related issues. Mitnick challenged the conditions of his release and recently won federal approval to pursue some computer-related work, including the Giga conference. "While we do not support or endorse Mr. Mitnick's past actions, his perspective is important as organizations must be able to understand the hacker mindset in order to effectively combat unauthorized access and hacker attacks," said Richard Fichera, a vice president and senior research fellow at Giga, in a prepared statement. According to Giga, Mitnick's keynote is designed to help attendees understand why people want to break into networks, how they do it and what organizations can do to stop them. Mitnick has maintained that while he did hack into companies' networks, including Novell Inc.'s, that he did not steal or cause other damage.
