Police in San Mateo County plan high-tech crime fight

Even in the heart of Silicon Valley, law enforcement agencies say they
often find themselves on the wrong side of the digital divide,
frustrated that they must use radio calls and shoe leather to share
information when trying to fight crime on the fly.

So, 15 police agencies in San Mateo County accepted an $800,000 grant
Friday from the California Law Enforcement Technology Equipment
Purchase Program to link themselves to their own online
information-sharing network.

The technological grant was part of $30 million, proposed by Gov. Gray
Davis in last year's budget, handed out to more than 280 agencies
throughout California. Under the proposed system for San Mateo County,
officers looking for a missing elderly person can download a
photograph and information about the person directly to laptops inside
patrol cars throughout the Peninsula.

Investigators will also be able to share detailed bulletins,
fingerprints, photographs and case reports.

The Southern San Mateo Police Authority, which will administer the
network, plans to work with the sheriff's department to create
``firewalls''to block sensitive information from the network's
countywide access.
