THE new owner of a web hosting company ruined by a devastating hacking event over the Queen's Birthday weekend has not ruled out an inside job.

The 30-minute hacking episode that led to the downfall of Victorian-based distribute.IT has been referred to the Australian Federal Police for investigation. The AFP would not comment further.

The distribute.IT hack is regarded as particularly vicious because it sought to destroy both live and backup data, rendering recovery virtually impossible.

In about 30 minutes, hackers wiped four of distribute.IT's eight servers, destroying 4800 accounts and taking down websites representing about half the customer base of 10,000.

The devastation extended to distribute.IT's reseller network, its main revenue stream, and people and organisations that resold domain names and developed websites as client services.
