Handling patient data security among minors is a touchy subject that has 
been evaluated more prominently of late with potential EHR software 
complications. Minors’ patient data is valuable to would-be hackers even 
more so than adults because of the relative unblemished nature of their 
information. Michael Bruemmer, Vice President of Experian Data Breach 
Resolution, said there are high risks for children when it comes to health 
data breaches.

Bruemmer told HealthITSecurity.com that in the case of a minor or young 
adult, they’re most attractive for two reasons: 1. Minors have a clean 
slate in terms of credit and identity and 2. There’s a greater likelihood 
that their information isn’t being monitored or inspected because parents 
aren’t necessarily watching their files. And According to an FTC report 
from 2011 called “Stolen Futures: A Forum on Child Identity Theft,” 
children are 51 times more likely to become victims of identity theft than 
adults, with anywhere from 140,000 to 400,000 children affected annually 
by this crime.
