Well then they wouldn't be a surprise, would they? :)

Seriously though, the change in behavior on msfupdate is mainly geared at
regular users of Metasploit (as opposed to developers who will be git
cloning anyway). It helps ensure that updates are consistent and
high-quality, and avoids the occasional breakage that you sometimes
experience when you track minute-by-minute commits.
