SMS is ss7 based. You could buy a pair of combined linkset A links, buy an SMS gateway and communicate with it. Your best bet, IMHO, is dialing up and sending pages. There's a protocol..I forget. It's been a long time. -M -----Original Message----- From: owner-nanog () merit edu [mailto:owner-nanog () merit edu]On Behalf Of Dan Hollis Sent: Tuesday, August 03, 2004 5:18 AM To: 'nanog () merit edu' Subject: sms messaging without a net? Does anyone know of a way to send SMS messages without an internet connection? Having a network monitoring system send sms pages via email very quickly runs into chicken-egg scenario. How do you email a page to let the admins know their net has gone down. :-P AT&T shut down their TAP dialup late last year. The only method that comes to mind is to buy a GSM modem which has SMS messaging capability. Has anyone done this? -Dan
