Nmap GUI; Page redesign; nmap-hackers mini-faq; shake.net responses

I'm pleased to announce that Nmap now supports an optional graphical
interface. Zach Smith <matrxweb () hotmail com> wrote this front end in GTK+
and I hacked on a few more features. A screen shot is available at
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/images/nmapfe.gif .  A beta version (
nmap2.2-BETA3 ) of nmap is available from http://www.insecure.org/nmap/
which includes this functionality. Let me know if you have any trouble.

I should also warn you that the pages have been redesigned. Hopefull this
should make them easier to navigate. If you find anything broken on the
pages, or want to comment on the changes, drop me an email.

Someday I am going to write a FAQ on nmap and the nmap-hackers list. But
for now, here are the answers to two questions I receive most often:

Q: How do I unsubscribe? (usually expressed as: STOP SENDING ME ALL THIS
ANNOYING MAIL ASSHOLE!)

A: As the welcome letter explained when you subscribed, unsubscribing is
accomplished by sending mail to nmap-hackers-unsubscribe () insecure org .

Q: Is there an archive of the nmap-hackers list?

A: Yes. I am going to move to hypermail, but for now you can use the one
ezmlm maintains automatically. Send blank mail to
nmap-hackers-help () insecure org for detailed instructions.

And finally, I am appending the responses to the shake.net flame which
people posted to the list. Many people sent private mail as well. All
agreed that the company is bogus and should be avoided.

Hi.

While you're at it:

* count.cgi
* BIND version vulnerable to buffer overflow
* Frontpage Extensions
* mountd server vulnerable to buffer overflow
* statd can be used to execute arbitrary code as root
This company is certainly not serious about security (maybe about making
money)

Of course the information above is supplied for informational purposes only,
and of course shouldn't be used by anone for breaking in (like Fyodor noted,
they're not worth the effort)

<SNIP>

I entirely disagree with Fyodors previous statement. Carolyn could not
r00t that box.. ;)

The _really_ worrying thing about this is the usual "Yay, this is cool and
Free" and then 6 months down the corporate line "I gotta pay 300 per month
for this?"

Just my 2 ecus.

Regards,
SimonB.

Fydor.

Good job man. Thank you for the good information. While I did add my site
(advertising my consulting biz) to their search engine, I will never pay
them a cent. Another of of these BS operations that just repackages other
peoples works and tried to take claim for things is www.ntsecurity.net . In
the past, I have had a run in with the so called expert that runs the site
and he has proven to be nothing more than a wanna-be who takes other peoples
work and tried to get the credit for it. When confronted with this, he
immediately began acting like a 12 year old involved in a flame war on a
local BBS.  Pathetic.  Very pathetic.

Like you, I do not condone the attacking of anothers network, but lets start
weeding out the wanna-bes from the skilled and definitely valued
professionals.
