There are patches to do this. My question is *WHY*. Why do you want to mask your OS? It will provide you no extra protection.
Wrong. Potential intruders doing quick mass scans of multiple hosts will probably bypass your machine in the event they are looking to exploit a "Linux" machine and your fingerprint doesn't match up. It's just another little thing you can do in the overall scheme of things to harden your host protection.
