Nmap Christmas News

Hi All. While I was working on Nmap 3.95, some news piled up that
I'll give you now in one bunch. We're talking good stuff, like an
Nmap comic book, ShmooCon, new documentation, a chair from Walmart
designed for Nmap hacking, and more!

Speaking of Nmap 3.95, no hideous flaws have been discovered since the
release, so you more conservative folks can go ahead and upgrade now.

== New Nmap Guides ==

I have substantially updated the Nmap Version Detection paper. To
learn more about this neat system, visit
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/vscan/

I have written a new Nmap Install Guide and posted it at
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/install/ . Contents include compilation,
configure directives, download signature verification, all the
platforms you can shake a stick at, removal, and more.

The Nmap documentation page has been rewritten to include all the
Insecure.Org docs, plus new 3rd party docs that weren't previously
posted: http://www.insecure.org/nmap/docs.html. We're talking
everything from textual tutorials to Nmap animated Flash lessons!

If you find errors or have other suggestions for improving these
documents, do let me know!

Your response to the call for man page translations has been
overwhelming! 29 languages are in progress, and Chinese, Portuguese
(Brazil), and Portuguese (Portugal) are done. See the docs page above
for the links and details. The English version is still at
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/man/

I have given an Interview for the good guys at Whitedust Security.

== Weird Nmap News ==

Nmap and myself were featured in a comic book (!) by those crazy
fellows at Zone-H! Learn how Nmap can help save the world from
super-villains at http://www.zone-h.org/files/84/clustermind.html
(html) or http://www.insecure.org/stf/clustermind.pdf (pdf). Other
issues are available from http://www.hero-z.org . I was also featured
in Episode Zero a while back, but as some sort of gay robotic cat who
viciously attacks cleaning ladies. So I never mailed you guys about
that one :).

As if that isn't crazy enough, Robert Wesley McGrew just notified me
that Walmart is selling a chair designed for hard core Nmap hacking!
It is called the "Kickin' Deep X-Rocker" chair and a couple dudes are
shown on the box hacking the Matrix with Nmap all while competing in
some game. Image of the box:

== ShmooCon ==

I have agreed to speak (about Nmap or Russian Literature, I haven't
decided :) at the Shmoo Group's hacker conference (ShmooCon) next
month in Washington DC. This is their second year, and everyone
apparently had a blast (without me) last year. So this year I'm
getting in on the action! It is January 13-15 and WILL PROBABLY SELL
OUT LIKE IT DID LAST YEAR. So if we're going to have a strong Nmap
contingent, register soon! Also, the conference hotel deal
($153/night) expires THIS FRIDAY. Other speakers include Dan Geer,
Jennifer Granick, Dan Kaminsky, Johnny Long, Jason Scott, and at least
a dozen more. Apparently they hand out "Shmoo Balls" for attendees to
throw at speakers, and they just notified me of a new design that
"flies quite a bit better than the foam balls of last year". Just
great :).

That covers just about everything. Have a great holiday season, you
all! And if you find yourself with spare time during Christmas Break,
you're welcome to join in the action on the nmap-dev list working
toward Nmap 4.0! http://cgi.insecure.org/mailman/listinfo/nmap-dev

Cheers,
Fyodor
