I have a little over 300 in-line network IPS appliances at geographically dispersed locations. Often, there are "My Internets are slow" problems from one of these locations. I used to monitor the locations with smokeping, but the ping times showed no problems at all. Now I can use nmap -sQ with a few choice ports to see what is being slowed down by the content inspection engine of the NIPS.
