I'm pretty sure that GNOME uses .desktop files regardless of what
flavor of *nix it is on.

I know I also had them when I was running IceWM but I was using GNOME
pieces with it.  I can't be sure if they were part of IceWM or part of
the GNOME bits being used in IceWM.
