Hey David, I have some bad news and some good news. The bad news is I don't understand what that error message is trying to say ether. The good news is that error message was completely removed from Nmap in revision 11548 on 'Dec-29/2008'(according to a quick svn history search). So at the very least an upgrade should produce a better error message, it may even solve the problem completely.
