Hi Folks. Long time members of this list may recall my proposal in 2006 to better formalize Nmap's open source license. Right now the license is basically a mishmash of GPLv2 with several paragraphs of clarifications and exceptions. It is confusing to people, and it is also missing some important provisions of newer open source licenses. So back in 2006, I created an "Nmap Public Source License" which is still based on GPLv2, but also contains key provisions from other open source licenses.
OK, it's been four more months but I have some updates on this. First of all, I think it would be better to base NPSL on GPLv3 rather than GPLv2. When I wrote the first NPSL draft, GPLv3 was still in the review/discussion phase. So I'm going to make a new version and circulate it here for comments. But I'm not about to delay an Nmap release for this, so I just made some minor "patch" changes last night to Nmap's existing license instead. Hopefully this will close some loopholes and stop the biggest abusers. In related news, I've released a new version of Nmap (6.40) to the web site, just in time for Defcon and Black Hat! I'm working on finishing the changelog and then I'll send a more formal announcement out.
