While Hacking Exposed is a good and useful book, try books in other
genres to widen your knowledge base. Read books on firewalls, intrusion
detection systems (Intrusion Detection Systems: An Analysts Handbook),
routers/switches, and anything else you can get your hands on. It is one
thing if you know how to hack, but it is even better if you have a full
understanding of how everything works.

p.s. Maximum Linux Security is a poor book, oversized due to the fact
that the "author" likes to include hundreds of lines of useless code in
a book, doesn't make much sense to me.
