nothing like doing it by hand to make it the best, but sometimes it can

the Linux/*BSD tool "cheops" can be helpful here. i haven't played with it
in a while, so it may not be yet 1.0, but it's kind of neat. you can
actually get a decent map built rather quickly.

also look for opennms stuff, a group that are trying to do an open source
competitor to HP's network management software.
