With a cable "modem", which is actually a TNC, it's just a matter of putting the device into promiscuous mode, much as you would in a LAN setting. I've heard that many cable companies have equipment to test for this, and at least here, it's expressly forbidden in the EULA (Because I'm sure we all obey those completely;) And yes, to record the data stream from a line, you'd have to have access to the house (or apartment phone panel), or the telco equipment at some point. Or at least, you'd have to have a device planted here. I imagine a subnotebook with a wireless Ethernet card hidden in someone's basement... While we're on the subject, does anybody know if a similar thing can be pulled off with a cable modem? They say cable modems are "shared media" which is why you never get the advertised speeds, but by "shared media", do they mean that every other user's signals are available on your cable line also? Just a thought. -CJO- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jay Stapleton" <jstapleton () o2tech ca> To: "Deus, Attonbitus" <Thor () HammerofGod com>; "Evrim ULU" <evrim () envy com tr>; "pen-test" <pen-test () securityfocus com> Sent: Wednesday, July 03, 2002 6:11 PM Subject: RE: blind demodulation - sound card - lucent winmodem - new topics
Slightly simpler, you can pick up a telephone recording box I had a cheap one that hooked into the handset, but I believe the
deluxe
model goes right into the wall jack

cessories&catalog=RadioShack The hardware shouldn't be difficult at all, I'd like to see how the software works I was once told that you could record a 14.4k data stream, and play it back into a modem to demodulate both sides, but I can't imagine how it would be done.
