you should buy the fastest cpu and max memory you can afford
        - not based on "name brand" products

get a sgi challenge T10000 if you  can get one :-)

whether opteron or xeon will run faster for passwd cracking is another
issue

which motherboard you pic does make a difference due to which chipset
is used on the motherboard ..
        intel based chipset is better
        serverworks chipset used to be better for the p3/p4 days
