They would provide you with the "tricked-out" tools and, in the case of the Live CD distros, wouldn't necessarily need to replace your existing daily-use OS of choice. Add my favorite pen-test LiveCD distros: Whoppix: http://www.whoppix.net/ and Necromantux (Spanish): http://necromantux.gpul.org/ And you can even use them with VMWare, if you are using Windows.
