                     WASHINGTON -- The Clinton
                     administration is expected to announce
greater freedom for US firms to export
                     privacy-protecting encryption products
                     Thursday afternoon.

The decision is part of what a source
calls "three pillars" of a new White House
policy that also includes efforts to
                     protect US critical infrastructure and
additional powers granted to federal law
                     enforcement.

The announcement is scheduled to take
place at the White House at a 3 p.m. EDT
                     press conference that will include
                     Attorney General Janet Reno, Defense
                     Secretary William Cohen, and Commerce
                     Secretary William Daley.
