The article on GNU 64-bil PL8 compiler may be of some interest to secure coders. It speaks of language design, code validation suites for compilers, code reviews, etc. Others of lesser interest. Of interest - using GNU software for 64-bit microcode (aka millicode) generation. The architecture of the zSeries hardware is interesting also. Capacity is build in but capped. Capacity on demand is available with microcode upgrades (for a fee, of course). See, for example, literature on the z890 and z990 processors for details.
