You might want to check out Dragos Ruiu's snortpp.c for addition to your
update script.

It's a program that validates rules so they are proper for snort.

I just wrote an easy script to update the rules for snort.  (I'm learning.)
The script depends on snortrules.tar.gz extracting to a rules directory like
the current snortrules.tar.gz extracts.  My question though is will
snortrules.tar.gz always be archived in this same manner?  

Any suggestions/ideas on how I can change this behavior please let me know.
