mysql archive tool

I was wondering is anyone in Perl or PHP or any other language has created a 
MySQL database backup utility something that will allow me to backup say the 
last 2 weeks of data save that to a file and compress the information. I 
found snort_cleandb v.1.7  but it doesn't have any of this kind of 
functionality.  

If by chance there isn't anyone that has this type of tool avail then I 
suppose I will be creating a Perl version one that can work with both DBI and 
ODBC.
